A collateral relative (or collateral kinsman) is someone who is
descended from an ancestor of the subject (but is not an ancestor or
descendant of the subject). Your blood relatives consist of your
ancestors, descendants, and collateral relatives. The sister of
your father is a collateral relative, but her husband isn't.
